Stachys byzantina, often known as lamb's ears, is grown largely for its thick, smooth, velvety, silver-gray leaves, which create a quickly spreading mat 4-6" from the ground. In warm regions, leaves are evergreen, but in cold ones, they degrade significantly. Lamb's ear should be planted in open, sunny areas in fertile, well-drained sandy to clay loam soils. It is suitable for planting in rockeries, as borders in small gardens, and as ground coverings.
